Born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakami is one of the most influential and acclaimed artists to have emerged from Asia in the late 20th Century, creating a wide-ranging body of work that consciously bridges fine art, design, fashion, and popular culture. He was trained in the school of traditional Japanese painting known as Nihonga. However, the prevailing popularity of anime (animation) and manga (comic books) directed his interest and influences, as he has said, “it was more representative of modern day Japanese life.” Murakami's style, called Superflat, is characterised by flat planes of color and graphic images. Superflat is an artistic style that comments on otaku lifestyle and subculture, as well as consumerism and sexual fetishism. In 2008, Murakami was the only artist included in Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People" list.
