Lot description
THIS IS HARING'S ONLY POP-UP WORK.

Keith Haring uses bold lines, vivid colors and figures to create a visual language that expresses strong messages of life, unity, love, sex and war. Haring first achieved public attention with his chalk drawings in the subways of New York City. Haring loved children, and during his short life he created murals for public pools all over New York City. Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Haring grew up in Kutztown and was interested in art from an early age. From 1976 to 1978 he studied graphic design at The Ivy School of Professional Art, a commercial and fine art school in Pittsburgh. At age 19 Haring moved to New York City and studied at the School of Visual Arts. A gay rights activist, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation which aimed to provide funding to AIDS organizations and children’s programs. Hoping to make art more accessible and affordable, Haring opened his infamous “Pop Shop” in SoHo, Manhattan. When asked about the shop, Haring stated: "Here's the philosophy behind the Pop Shop: I wanted to continue the same sort of communication as with the subway drawings. I wanted to attract the same wide range of people and I wanted it to be a place where, yes, not only collectors could come, but also kids from the Bronx…this was still an art statement." Haring died in 1990 at the age of 31.
