This series of paper plates was designed by Pop Art icon Roy Lichtenstein for the New York City store, "On First." Located on First Avenue, the store was the brainchild of fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern, who opened it with the idea of selling objects for the home designed by artists, fashion designers, etc. However, the store closed very shortly after this item was commissioned, and most of these plates were neither distributed, nor seen again.
Roy Lichtenstein created this multiple investigating, in three-dimension, the idea of still life, even mimicking the reflection caught in a porcelain plate. Lichtenstein would not revisit the theme of reflection until 1990 when he created the "Reflection Series.” In the best tradition of pop, this early multiple was fun and affordable, without the "fine art" seriousness of New York Abstract Expressionist artists that the pop artists found tiresome.
