Seller's Description:
Murakami x Louis Vuitton "Monogramouflage Denim" 16" x 16"

The piece has not been hung, or even taken out of the beautiful LV box.

COMES IN THE ORIGINAL BOX WITH CERTIFICATE FROM LOUIS VUITTON AND MURAKAMI.

From April 5th to July 13th, 2008, the Brooklyn Museum hosted the largest retrospective of Murakami’s works to date, including an example of this work which was one of the high points of the show. It was created by Murakami especially for the Brooklyn Museum show, and it was exhibited in a Louis Vuitton boutique placed in the center of the Museum, along with other Vuitton fashion accessories designed by Murakami that were offered for sale. The idea of offering branded works in a museum setting was revolutionary and demonstrated Murakami’s complete understanding of Warhol’s strategies. In fact, the camouflage design was lifted directly from Warhol’s 1987 Camouflage prints and paintings. In this case, Murakami’s decision to use camouflage as a background to the luxury monogram of Louis Vuitton was a brilliant commentary by Murakami on the state of America’s geopolitical status during the Iraq war; as well as melding both fashion and art to create a social statement.

Murakami is one of the most significant artists of the younger generation to emerge from Japan. He is considered to be the Japanese Andy Warhol. In synthesizing popular culture and traditional form, Murakami's work has pervaded both high and low culture. He designed a series of handbags for Louis Vuitton a few years ago, but his work has also seen very high prices in the contemporary auctions the past few years. A major retrospective of Murakami, organized and exhibited by the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, toured to the Brooklyn Museum in 2008. This work was created specifically for that exhibition. The work comes with the original box and certificate from Louis Vuitton and Murakami.

Art Market Data

Takashi Murakami Price Development
  • More About this Chart
    • The chart shows the annual average premium prices of lots sold by the artist, which are calculated by dividing the total sales volume of the premium prices of all lots sold by the number of lots sold. For 2009, the data included in the calculations is current through the 15th of June. The charts will be updated every three months.

The data is culled from the artnet Price Database, which has collected auction sales results for over twenty years.

Prices are stated in USD in order to facilitate comparison and analysis of the market reports. When sales took place in another currency, the conversion of that amount into USD was done on the basis of the average conversion rate applicable on the day of the sale.

Although most auction houses these days report transactions in prices that include a buyer’s premium, some auction houses report only the hammer price. Based on an analysis of historical auction catalogs, we apply a formula to all records with hammer prices to estimate the effect of a buyer’s premium. All prices used in the charts are either reported in or equated to hammer price plus buyer’s premium.
