Since 1973 John Baldessari has been exploring photography as a way to create collaged compositions that explore the relationships between images. He takes his imagery from many sources, including advertising and film. He also applies a painterly element to remind the viewer that the hand of the artist is not only in the ordering of the images but to hybridize mark making and photo making. The definition of "cliché" is: something is not original; the antithesis of something fresh. But when arranged by Baldessari, the "Cliché" becomes completely original.
