Alex Katz, born in 1927, is an American figural artist best known for his paintings, prints, and sculptures. Katz’s style, associated with the Pop Movement, transforms subjects of people and scenes of uneventful daily life, such as a “September Afternoon” into elevated iconographic images. Though his sitters were often close friends, (he painted his wife Ava frequently,) Katz generalizes the features of his subjects and reduces the work to formal properties of light, color, and scale making his art familiar to all possible viewers. Katz’s portraits reveal his ongoing pursuit to depict social interactions and language while his landscapes reveal his fascination with plein air painting. PaceWildenstein held a retrospective of his work entitled “Spring Alex Katz: Fifteen Minutes,” in 2006. Since 1954, Katz’s work has been the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions internationally.
