Seller's Description:
Shepard Fairey's Duality of Humanity(III) produced in a limited edition of 450 signed and numbered copies released in 2008. This work is in mint condition, and extremely rare.

A bit of history on the genesis of the series: Al Rockoff collaborated with Shepard to create the Duality of Humanity series based on Rockoff’s coverage of Khmer Rouge takeover of the Vietnam War and Phnom Penh-Cambodia’s capital. Shepard wanted to express the dramatic juxtaposition of war and peace that is accomplished by Rockoff’s photojournalism. Each illustration has been slightly altered, with the photographer’s consent, to create a more powerful symbol for peace. These shots have been archived since the Vietnam War. Since then, Shepard is the first to bring Al’s work to the masses.
----
After the Obama "Progress" and "Hope" images that became synonymous with his super optimistic campaign Shepard Fairey is visible worldwide. He is seen as more of a godfather to the movement than an artist these days, very much like an American version of the UK's Banksy.

He has become a front runner in the street art environment and given a voice to American graffiti art, encapsulating a new chapter for the movement. Demonstrating a playful yet powerful approach to the world of politics reflecting their flaws and strengths in an publicly accessible street forum. The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston call him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. He is one of the most recognizable artist working today and an idol for a massive cultural progression.

Fairey attended the Rhode Island Institute of Design where in the early 90's he created his iconic "OBEY" character, an ominous face that finds its origins in the appropriated Andre the Giant.

Art Market Data

Prints Price Development
  • More About this Chart
    • The chart shows the annual average premium prices of lots sold within a certain collecting category, which are calculated by dividing the total sales volume of the premium prices of all lots sold by the amount of lots sold. artnet defined peer groups or artists representing certain collecting categories. To be included in artnet’s peer groups, artists need to have sold either at least 10 lots at USD 10,000 or more, or at least 40 lots at USD 5,000 or more, or at least 3 lots each year since 2006 of which at least 2 were sold over USD 5,000. Our Prints art peer group consists of 2,355 artists. For 2009, the data included in the calculations is current through the 15th of June. The charts will be updated every three months.

*includes all Old Masters, 19th Century, Impressionist, Modern, Contemporary, American and Latin American artists who had any prints lots

The data is culled from the artnet Price Database, which has collected auction sales results for over twenty years.

Prices are stated in USD in order to facilitate comparison and analysis of the market reports. When sales took place in another currency, the conversion of that amount into USD was done on the basis of the average conversion rate applicable on the day of the sale.

Although most auction houses these days report transactions in prices that include a buyer’s premium, some auction houses report only the hammer price. Based on an analysis of historical auction catalogs, we apply a formula to all records with hammer prices to estimate the effect of a buyer’s premium. All prices used in the charts are either reported in or equated to hammer price plus buyer’s premium.
