Seller's Description:
Shepard Fairey's Duality of Humanity(III) produced in a limited edition of 450 signed and numbered copies released in 2008. This work is in mint condition, and extremely rare.
A bit of history on the genesis of the series: Al Rockoff collaborated with Shepard to create the Duality of Humanity series based on Rockoff’s coverage of Khmer Rouge takeover of the Vietnam War and Phnom Penh-Cambodia’s capital. Shepard wanted to express the dramatic juxtaposition of war and peace that is accomplished by Rockoff’s photojournalism. Each illustration has been slightly altered, with the photographer’s consent, to create a more powerful symbol for peace. These shots have been archived since the Vietnam War. Since then, Shepard is the first to bring Al’s work to the masses.
----
After the Obama "Progress" and "Hope" images that became synonymous with his super optimistic campaign Shepard Fairey is visible worldwide. He is seen as more of a godfather to the movement than an artist these days, very much like an American version of the UK's Banksy.
He has become a front runner in the street art environment and given a voice to American graffiti art, encapsulating a new chapter for the movement. Demonstrating a playful yet powerful approach to the world of politics reflecting their flaws and strengths in an publicly accessible street forum. The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston call him one of today's best known and most influential street artists. He is one of the most recognizable artist working today and an idol for a massive cultural progression.
Fairey attended the Rhode Island Institute of Design where in the early 90's he created his iconic "OBEY" character, an ominous face that finds its origins in the appropriated Andre the Giant.
