Anish Kapoor
Memory, 2008
Cast made of colored PU
2.87 x 8.97 x 5.51 in
7.30 x 22.80 x 14 cm
Anish Kapoor, born in 1954 in Banswara, India is a London based sculptor and Royal Academician. His pieces are characterized by simple curved forms that evoke mystery through their large size, dark cavities, and monochromatic bright colors. His sculptures often have reflective facades that invite touch and a second glance. Kapoor frequently covers his pieces with powder pigment that he allows to dust the floor surrounding the objects made of solid quarried stone. Kapoor’s sculptures play with themes of duality including earth/sky, matter/spirit, lightness/darkness and male/female. Anish Kapoor has rocked the art world with his abstract sculptures that dissect form, shape and space simultaneously. One of Kappor’s sculptures entitled “Cloud Gate” is a 110-ton silver structure that resides in Millennium Park in Chicago, Illinois. His mid-career retrospective was featured at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston in 2008. "Memory" is currently at the Guggenheim, New York.
Edition of 40. With its original box.
In the edition to his commissioned work for the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, Anish KAPOOR encased the negative form of his sculpture in a massive block made of yellowish transparent acrylic. Due to the inversion of the space and the transparency of the material, the Memory edition defies a rational overview, just like KAPOOR's momumental work in the exhibition hall.
Details of the commissioned project can be seen at Deutsche Guggenheim's website: http://www.deutsche-guggenheim.de/e/ausstellungen-anishkapoor01.php
