”When you put together things that other people have thrown out, you’re really bringing them to life – a spiritual life that surpasses the life for which they were originally created." - Louise Nevelson
Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) was a towering figure in postwar American art, exerting great influence with her innovative sculpture made of found wood objects, and celebrated public art. She was recognized during her lifetime as one of America's most distinguished artists, and her work continues to inspire contemporary sculptors today. Her monumental outdoor sculptures, painted wooden assemblages of boxes, multiple editions, etchings, and cast-paper prints all reflected a personal vision which Louise Nevelson identified as emanating from her ability to see in the fourth dimension. This work is a combination of Nevelson's sculptural and two dimensional works. It reflects her shared interest in form, tone, texture and line that we see in much of her revered sculptural works.
