Seller's Description:
|
In this witty 1970s sculpture, 'Oiseau de Fer' (Steel Bird), Lam's interest in primitivism is combined with assemblage, reminiscent of Picasso’s sculptures of the 1930s. Here, Wilfredo Lam references the Afro-Cuban deity of the 'orisha eiye ororo', the bird God places in man's head at birth as an emblem of the mind. Lam, a Cuban born to a Chinese father and mother of Congolese and Hispanic decent, utilizes the erotic, mythological creatures of his native culture within a sophisticated Surrealist idiom, acquired during his studies with Pablo Picasso and Andre Breton in Paris. The resulting synthesis evokes the vibrant spirit of Lam's cultural heritage. This work is part of our Latin American sale.
