Seller's Description:
Louise Nevelson, was born in Kiev, Czarist Russia in 1899 and immigrated to the United States at the age of 6. Nevelson is known for using everyday found objects to create “assemblages” and expressionist “crates” which she groups together to form new creations. Nevelson has said that in creating her sculptures she brings other people’s garbage to life again: “When you put together things that other people have thrown out, you’re really bringing them to life—a spiritual life that surpasses the life for which they were originally created.” Nevelson’s artwork can be found internationally at museums including The Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Japan, the Musée national d'art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris France, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Tate Gallery in London, England. In 2009 the PaceWildenstein in New York City, held a retrospective of her work entitled “Louise Nevelson: Dawns and Dusks.” Nevelson’s most famous work "Dawn's Wedding Feast" was created in 1959 for the exhibition entitled, 'Sixteen Americans' at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The wood assemblage painted all white included four chapels, bride, groom, wedding cake, chest, mirror, pillow and various standing columns that were to represent guests. Ultimately, due to its enormity the piece had to be partitioned into 16 separate works in order to be sold.

Art Market Data

Louise Nevelson Price Development
  • More About this Chart
    • The chart shows the annual average premium prices of lots sold by the artist, which are calculated by dividing the total sales volume of the premium prices of all lots sold by the number of lots sold. For 2009, the data included in the calculations is current through the 15th of June. The charts will be updated every three months.

The data is culled from the artnet Price Database, which has collected auction sales results for over twenty years.

Prices are stated in USD in order to facilitate comparison and analysis of the market reports. When sales took place in another currency, the conversion of that amount into USD was done on the basis of the average conversion rate applicable on the day of the sale.

Although most auction houses these days report transactions in prices that include a buyer’s premium, some auction houses report only the hammer price. Based on an analysis of historical auction catalogs, we apply a formula to all records with hammer prices to estimate the effect of a buyer’s premium. All prices used in the charts are either reported in or equated to hammer price plus buyer’s premium.
