Aristide Joseph Maillol, French, 1861-1944. Maillol was a great painter, sculptor, printmaker, tapestry designer and wood-engraver. In 1881 he went to Paris to become a painter, where he met Bourdelle and Gauguin. He began sculpting in 1893. His name is mentioned along with Rodin, Giacometti, Picasso and Moore. Although inspired by the Classical tradition of Greek and Roman sculpture, his figures have all the elemental sensuousness and dignity associated with the Mediterranean peasant.
