Jean DuBuffet was the great French avant-garde painter (1901-1985). He developed a distinctive style of simple, primitive images. This style helped him gain a worldwide reputation. He was fascinated by the art of children and the insane for which he coined the term: “art brut” (raw art), which he emulated in his own, seemingly, violent art, tempered with elements of vitality and broad humor.
