Seller's Description:
This pensive nude highlights Avery’s penchant toward the reduction of detail and attention to surface patterns reminiscent of Matisse. For Avery, the subject matter was less important than the mood and it is telling that he titled this work “striped drape” wherein the sitter becomes a foil for the patterns and lines created by the cloth placed under the model which becomes the focal point of the drawing. This work exemplifies his simplicity of vision which inspired not only Rothko, who referred to him as his favorite artist, but also the American color-field painters. Note below a smaller study for this work which sold in 2005 at auction.
His works of art are held in numerous major collections of modern art in Europe and America, including: the Tate, the MoMA, the Met and the Hirshorn Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
