Candida Höfer (German, born 1944) is known for her austere photographs of the interior spaces of public buildings that are centers of cultural life, such as schools, libraries, churches, and museums. Höfer studied at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, from 1976 to 1982, and she is often considered a member of the Düsseldorf School that evolved under the influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher. From her mentors she acquired her preference for stark images and for subjects that can be developed as series. Her photographs are not just documents but reveal repeated forms within public spaces to unearth patterns of order, logic, and disruption imposed on these interiors by absent creators and inhabitants. With her Barock Brasilien series, Höfer’s photographs of the interiors of several baroque churches in Brazil reveal viewer’s expectations of these ornate interiors through their furniture, lighting fixtures, ceiling or floor tiles, chairs, and tables, which create a sense of orderliness. As Höfer has stated, her photographs capture the “psychology of social architecture.”
