The TV Cello was Nam June Paik’s signature artwork, created for Charlotte Moorman, the artist who performed with him in many of his early works. This particular version of the TV Cello was created for his friend, the gallerist Emily Harvey, and is dedicated to her in the artist’s hand. It conforms to the original TV Cello whose sale to the Walker Art Center was orchestrated by Harvey. Paik and Harvey lived in one of the original Fluxus loft buildings in Soho organized by George Macunias.
Included is the original video disk of Charlotte Moorman wearing the ‘TV Bra’ with Nam June Paik impersonating her cello. It also shows Charlotte playing the TV Cello in concert with the classical cellist Rostropovich, her former teacher. As the video progresses, the visuals morph into a psychedelic frenzy of lights and colors.
The TV Cello comes with a unique traveling case built by Davidson Gigliotti.
