Frida Kahlo on Bench, 1939
Carbon print
14.8 x 10 in. (37.6 x 25.7 cm.)
This photograph was originally printed as a Carbro print. The intense coloring is a signature of Muray's magazine work. The notable Paul Outerbridge also used this process. This print uses a contemporary technique that only a few practice in the United States. Tod Gangler is one of the most respected printers in the U.S. The portrait represents one of many black and white and color portraits that Nickolas Muray took of his friend, lover, and confidant, Frida Kahlo.
Muray began photographing Kahlo in color in the winter of 1938-1939, while she was in New York attending an exhibition of her paintings at the Julien Levy Gallery. Muray photographed Frida more often than any other person.
This image was the cover image of the book, "I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU...FRIDA KAHLO TO NICKOLAS MURAY: Unpublished photographs and letters." Written by Salomon Grimberg. Published by Schirmer/Mosel 2004
