DESCRIPTION:  A proof impression before the edition of 1511; printed clearly but slightly lighter than the other two proofs from Dürer’s Life of the Virgin offered here; in very good condition; mostly with thread margins beyond the borderline all round.

The subject of The Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple is only mentioned in the apocryphal writings. The scene usually shows the fifteen steps the Virgin climbed to meet the High Priest. Here Dürer incorporates an animated crowd. The Virgin seems to rush up the stairs, her figure partly hidden behind a column and her hair blowing in the wind.

“The complexity of this scene and the relative lack of focus … suggest that this is one of the earliest compositions to be designed in the series. Mythological reliefs on the architecture identify the building as pagan; as does the statue above the arch” (Charles Talbot in cat. Washington, p. 180, no. 140).
