DESCRIPTION:  Wilfrid Gabriel de Glehn and Jane de Glehn were great friends and constant traveling companions of John Singer Sargent's. Wilfrid, nicknamed "Premp" by Sargent, was the English-born son of Robert and Sophie von Glehn. He studied art at Jean-Paul Lauren's studio in Paris and later helped Edwin Austin Abbey with his murals at the studio Abbey shared with Sargent at Fairford, Gloucestershire. Wilfrid married the American painter Jane Erin Emmet in 1904. He very much admired Sargent's work and therefore developed a very similar painting style. He changed his name to de Glehn at the beginning of World War I. Jane de Glehn was one of the three talented Emmet sisters, cousin of the artist Ellen Emmet Rand, and a distant relation of the novelist, Henry James. Jane painted and drew portraits in crayon. She was the model for several of Sargent's most remarkable informal portraits and figure studies, notably In a Garden, Corfu; The Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati and a stunning watercolor portrait.*
