DESCRIPTION:  A counterproof is created when a damp sheet of paper is placed over a chalk or pastel drawing or a recently pulled print and pressure is applied, either by hand-rubbing or running the sheets through a printing press. A mirror image of the pastel is transferred onto the second sheet of paper, while the pastel itself appears essentially unchanged.

This process was used extensively in the eighteenth century by artists such as François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, who employed it to make multiples of their chalk drawings, which they sometimes reinforced with additional chalk lines and shading. The practice lapsed in the early nineteenth century with the ascendancy of Romanticism, but by the later nineteenth century, the fresh and airy hues of pastel were once again found to be particularly appealing, and Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Renoir produced important bodies of work in this medium, as well as many counterproofs. Although Degas’s counterproofs have been known for the better part of a century, the extent of Cassatt’s work in this medium was only revealed in 2004, and Renoir’s counterproofs remained, until recently, virtually unknown.

The pastel from which this counterproof was created is in the National Museum of Serbia, Belgrade.
