Biography

He had previously studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and met Renoir. Cordey was also closely related to Guillaumin, Pissarro and Sisley.

In 1881, he traveled to Algeria with his friend Auguste Renoir.

In 1887 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, and from 1903 onwards at the Salon d'Automne.

His landscape paintings depict mostly motives of the Oise at Auvers, Pontoise and Éragny.

Cordey was considered wealthy and painted really only when he wanted it. Corresponding rarity have his artworks.

There is little literature on Cordey, who exhibited only rarely. Mentioned is an exhibition in the gallery Choiseul in Paris, which took place in the winter of 1913 / 14. In relation to this exhibition, Alphonse Thalasso manifests in February 1914 in "L'Art et les Artistes praised Cordeys landscapes of Éragny and his talent as a portraitist."

In the preface to the catalog Gustave Geffroy wrote: "You can pretend not to know the work Cordeys because it was never seen in its entirety. The painter had his livelihood. It is said that one of them was [an art dealer] came at the end of his life to him and asked him to give him all of his pictures. Cordey had nothing against it, but laid down such a high price, the price of his life that the visitor not insisted."

In 1911 Cordey died in Paris.
