DESCRIPTION:  Hippolyte Petitjean was born in Macon in 1854, where he studied at the local art school, before moving to Paris in 1872 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He worked in the studios of Cabanel and Puvis de Chavannes, the latter leaving a lasting impression on the young painter.

Petitjean first showed at the Salon in 1880. Although he was friends with Seurat from 1884, it was only two years later that he began to show an interest in divisionism. He first exhibited with the Salon des Indépendants in 1891, and remained faithful to them from thereon. One can often see the influence of the symbolists in his carefully constructed landscapes and figures, but he was a pointillist at heart until his death in 1929. He also participated in several international Pointillist exhibitions between 1893 and 1921.
