DESCRIPTION:  This example of Proserpine was the second model Powers created. In the original version, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Proserpine is emerging from a basket of flowers. The demands of the carving proved far too labor intensive and time consuming to keep up with the demand for this ideal figure, which was to become Powers' most popular. Even before the completion of the original model, Powers was redesigning Proserpine as seen in this example—emerging from acanthus leaves, and produced her in two sizes, a full and two-thirds bust. Later he further simplified the work to satisfy both demand for the piece and to give collectors a somewhat more cost-friendly option. In the third version, Proserpine’s truncation is a streamlined, decorative border.
