Historical Description:
Allowing us to find our own meaning within its playful imagery, La Femme Arborescente exemplifies Miró's immense talent as a printmaker. Bold, vertical black lines anchor the center of the composition against a delicately splattered background. Vibrant patches of blue, green, yellow, and red dance around these black lines, suggesting the figures of a tree and a woman. Each viewer witnesses something different in this mysterious work, contributing to its mystery. One of Miró's larger prints, its grandiose size commands the attention of a room. We find it difficult to focus on a single component of this wonderfully captivating work, as each figure appears strikingly unique yet interacts perfectly with those around it.
Created in 1974, this wash tint, etching and aquatint is hand signed in pencil by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left (from the total edition of 50 numbered and signed prints plus some artist's proofs). This piece is published by Maeght, Paris and printed by Morsang, Paris.
