DESCRIPTION:  Throughout the 1920s and 30s Paul Nash was a regular visitor to Souldern Court in Oxfordshire - the home of his friend and patron Dr Percy Withers. Nash painted many pictures at Souldern and was able to work undisturbed for long periods with the encouragement of his host who provided good meals and home comforts. This large watercolour painted in 1925 contains the classic elements of Nash's landscape compositions whilst the technique reveals his pre-occupation with Cézanne at this period. The poetic lightness of touch and the subtle gradations of colour are key features of his watercolours during the mid 1920s. Writing to Withers about one of his Souldern watercolours Nash wrote 'There was at the moment of vision a pale glow indistinctly warm amid the those trees, that was what interested me... My emphasis... was... instinctive.'
PROVENANCE:  Dr Percy Withers
