Diederich crafted this weathervane and other objects during his stay with Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead at his Byrdcliffe home, White Pines. Three weather vanes by Diedierich were housed at Byrdcliffe until 1976 when Whitehead's son Peter died. Each vane has identical arrows, however the designs addressed different subjects 'Apollo'—now in the collection of The Huntington Library, San Marino, California—a puma pounching, and this polo players motif. Diederich also used variations of this polo players composition of in his woodcuts—one of which was printed in Hervey White's The Plowshare.
