DESCRIPTION:

Kisling visited the south of France regularly in 1918-1920 and his greatest landscapes were created in and around St Tropez. In 1916 he illustrated La Guerre du Luxembourg by Blaise Cendrars which was the first boost to a brilliant career which stretched from his first show at the Galerie Druet, Paris, in 1919 through to retrospectives at the Grand Palais, Paris and the Whitney, New York
Moise Kisling was born in Krackow in 1891 and studied under the Polish artist Pankiewicz. He moved to Paris in 1910 and formed a solid friendship with artists such as Modigliani and Derain. He was one of the first to sign up for the Legion in World War I. Kisling was injured at the Battle of the Somme in 1915 and returned to his studio in Paris where he worked, in Montparnasse, for over 27 years. He painted with Jules Pascin and was heavily influenced by the work of his contemporary, Marc Chagall. Kisling’s Cubist-influenced works of the 1910s make up his most important period.
Moise Kisling’s work is extensively exhibited at the Musée du Petit Palais, Geneva.
