DESCRIPTION:  Georges Braque is amongst the most influential artists of the 20th Century. It was his astonishing early Cubist paintings that drew Picasso to follow the path of Analytical Cubism made by Braque from 1908-1911. Picasso and Braque’s sojourn in Ceret, France in 1910 was perhaps the most important artistic journey of the 1900s.

The term Cubism was thanks to the art critic that also ‘named’ the Fauves in 1905 – Louis Vauxcelles. He distinguished Braque from the rest in 1908 after saying his work was full of little Cubes which thus coined the famous movement. There were really only three ‘members’ – Juan Gris was arguably the only other.

The present work is a late piece, from 1958 when Braque was experimenting with bright colours and large, obvious shapes. The colours here remind the viewer of the tremendous later works by Henri Matisse completed in Vence late in his career. Bright yellow, bright pink and solemn grey all work together in a simple but fascinating composition. It was really only late in career that Braque went back to discovering the wonderful effect of colour on composition. Considering he was highly important within the Fauve movement his most impressive works seldom had a strong palette. This painting is perhaps a return to his 1905 roots – bright, colourful and innovative.
