DESCRIPTION:  Brush lithograph. Printed in four colours from three stones. Artist’s monogram and date lower right corner, text by another hand JANE/Avril, printer’s name right side. Key stone printed in black, one colour stone in red, one in yellow and blue (the snake on dress printed from one stone) On one sheet of white wove paper, 560 x 380mm.

One of Lautrec’s most compelling colour posters, this was commissioned at the beginning of 1899 by Jane Avril, who remained faithful to the last, and printed by Stern in the course of that year. For reasons no longer apparent, however, it was never displayed. In the treatment of the female silhouette, which is almost full-length, it is related to Lautrec’s last poster, La Gitane. For these last two posters from lithographs, the artist was able to use a process which enabled different colours to be applied at one printing, provided they were arranged in the order of rotation of the machine, and here only three printings were needed for the four colours used.

The design sketch Dortu S.D.29, pencil, 55.8 x 37.6cm, has the same dimensions as the poster, and some notes on the colours for the printer: ‘Rouge/bleu roi/noir’ (Ill. p. 412).

An extraordinary impression. The paper in very fine condition. The red in the finest condition ever to appear for sale.
