Coomans was a highly regarded classical genre painter of the Belgian School. Born in Brussels, he studied at the Academies of Antwerp and Ghent under Nicaise De Keyser, Pierre Van Hanselaere and Baron Gustave Wappers. From 1843 to 1845 he accompanied the French Army to Algeria, studying the country and sketching his impressions of the Orient. Visits to Greece, Turkey, the Crimea and Italy followed.
In 1856 he travelled to Naples and subsequently stayed there for four years. His exposure to ancient Roman architecture and culture at Pompeii and Herculaneum inspired the work for which he is best known. Nineteenth century artists had a special fascination with the classical world and painters invented a distinctive image of it, creating a more accessible vision of the landscape of antiquity. Coomans was mesmerised by the era that had been revealed through the archeological excavations and his paintings influenced many other artists of the time.
Coomans settled in Paris in 1860 and his work was exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon.
To this day, Joseph Coomans’ historical scenes are highly regarded all over the world, receiving international recognition.
