Catlett used this form in at least two other works from the same period. The earlier variation (23.5 inches high) was carved from black marble in 1969. (Gedeon, illus. 62) In this example the mother’s crooked arm wraps her face more tightly, the neck and shoulders are closer together, and the child’s head is just below its mother’s—the sum of these variations give the work a constricted feeling. Another related example of Mother and Child, 1971, in cedar, (26 inches high) shows the same gesture, with differences in the carved details. Here, the mother’s right hand is incised, and the face of the child smooth.
