DESCRIPTION:
|
c. 1885
This work was completed as a study for the final version of the same title in the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, NY.
In his catalogue raisonné of Gérôme’s work, Dr. Gerald Ackerman notes that Gérôme left the present work in an unfinished state, with drawn outlines visible through the paint layer throughout the painting. He notes that certain “finished” areas were probably completed by Gérôme’s son-in-law, the artist Aimé-Morot.
