Canvas is wax-resin lined and stretcher bars have been replaced. There are some scattered touches of inpainting in both the background and on the woman’s face.
One of seven sons, he was born to a prosperous German family who emigrated to America and settled in Chicago in 1869. He was first exposed to art while working at a lithographic firm near the Art Institute. He took a job in the shipping department there and enrolled in night classes.
In 1894, he became an American citizen and graduated from the Institute where he was invited to stay and teach. He spent many summers painting in Giverny. He painted a number of typical Giverny subjects of women in outdoor landscape. In 1928-29, he was a guest artist at Stanford University.
