The title refers to Demeter the classical Greek goddess of the harvest, the fertility of the earth, the seasons, fecundity etc.
Tilson spells out her name DEMETRA on the canvas employing letters of the ancient Greek alphabet and depicts at least two other of her symbols, three ears of wheat and a torch.
Demeter was exhibited at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, Walker Art Gallery (1991) and Joe Tilson Works 1961-1991, Waddington Galleries (1992). Reproduced Waddington Galleries catalogue (p.19) and the monograph Tilson (p.162) published by Thames & Hudson.
