Guillaumin participated in five of the seven Impressionist exhibitions, the exceptions being the second in 1876 and the fourth. It is highly likely however that he attended the 1876 exhibition and so would have been familiar with Monet’s similar work La Seine à Argenteuil, of 1875, which was exhibited that year and is now in the San Francisco Museum of Art.
Guillaumin’s constant association with his fellow Impressionists was fundamental to his oeuvre over these years, and, equally, to his later stylistic developments.
