Although better known for his works in watercolour, Flint painted some of his finest nudes in tempera (a mixture of water, powdered paint and egg white. )
Flint had known the model for this work since she was a child. (She
also posed for "Alethea", exhibited at The Royal Academy 1935 No. 609, Sold at Sotheby's April 29, 2009 for £99,650.) When he finally sold it, he wrote "I parted with this picture with a pang."
Flint was one of the very few artists that the Royal Academy has honoured with a retrospective exhibition of his work during his own lifetime. Flint personally selected this picture for inclusion in the exhibition as being a good example of his finest work. In all the years we have been handling the work of Russell Flint, this one is without doubt the best we have ever had.
