A large round centre/dining table by Angelo Mangiarotti, in Grigio Scogliera marble, designed 1971. The table is supported by a large single reverse-tapering marble pedestal. Part of the “Eros” series it was manufactured by Skipper- this is a fine and rare piece.
The “Eros” series of furniture has no joints, only an interlocking system, and is stabilized by the weight of the marble.
Born in Milan in 1921, the Italian architect, urban planner, and industrial designer Angelo Mangiarotti had a joint practice with Bruno Morassutti from 1955 until 1960. In 1960 he joined the Associazone per il Disegno Industriale and founded his own studio. During the 60’s and 70’s Angelo Mangiarotti designed lighting and furniture for Artemide, Vetreria Vistosi, and for Knoll International. As an architect, Angelo Mangiarotti designed several buildings in the International Modern style, built of prefab elements of reinforced concrete. In Milan, he designed and built the Mater Misericordiae church in 1957 and, in 1959/60, a housing unit for several families. Mangiarotti was a visiting professor at the Istituto Superiore di Disegno Industriale in Venice, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. and at numerous institutions in Italy and abroad. His work with space and light was influential in the 50’s and 60’s, when designers as diverse as William Klein and Fumihiko Maki worked and studied at his studio.
