DESCRIPTION:  Charles Leickert was a Dutch Landscape painter. He first trained with Bart van Hove and Wijandus Nuyen and then joined his most influential teacher, Andreas Schelfhout. He became one of Schelfhout’s most talented and successful pupils.

In 1856 Leickert became a member of Arti et Amicitae in Amsterdam. He exhibited regularly in Amsterdam and The Hague between 1841 and 1887 and Leeuwarden between 1855 and 1863. Leickert lived in Holland until 1887, when he moved to Mainz in Germany and remained there for the rest of his life.

Leickert preferred the rustic themes of the unembellished landscapes near Dutch villages and towns. He painted picturesque riverbanks, winter scenes with windmills and skaters with delicately executed skies and masterfully rendered transparent ice. His work can be found in most Dutch museums including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam and the Central Museum, Utrecht.
