Franz Richard Unterberger was an Austrian artist who specialised in painting scenes of Italy. Born in Innsbruck, the son of an art dealer, he first studied at the Munich Academy in 1853 with Clemens von Zimmermann and Julius Lange, later continuing his training at the Weimar Academy. He visited Milan in 1858, but returned to Munich the following year owing to the unsettled political situation.
Unterberger enrolled at the Düsseldorf Academy where his fellow students included the famous landscapists the Achenbach brothers. He visited Norway in 1860 with Andreas Achenbach and later frequently returned to Norway and Denmark. He also made several trips to the coasts of England and Scotland. Unterberger travelled throughout Europe but by far the greatest influence on his work was the stunning Italian scenery.
