DESCRIPTION:
|
Paris: Librairie Centrale des Beaux Arts, 1896 - 1899. 144 hors text illustrations. An important example of floral designs in the decorative arts from the turn of the century. Each book contains 72 vibrantly colored, numbered lithographs, made by several of his pupils (such as Verneuil, Giacometti, Anna Martin, J. Milesi) after watercolors by Grasset. For each plant, he portrays a detailed, botanical rendering followed by two stylized versions, in an effort to ‘promulgate a return to the direct study of nature, which he believed to be the only true source of comprehension of ornamental motifs.’ These patterns to be used for wallpaper, textiles, ceramics and applied metalworks. Overall, a very good copy. Colors fresh.
