DESCRIPTION:

David Bates was born in Birmingham in 1840 where he received his formal artistic training. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from 1872. Bates painted landscapes in a Romanticised fashion which have been impeccably observed, many of his sketches and studies still exist which show his attention to detail in capturing light. As the industrial age gathered pace towns grew and so too did demand for nostalgic and atmospheric landscape paintings – a reminder of a lost age. These signed Oil on Canvas paintings are presented in their original handmade giltwood frames.
