Ferdinand Heilbuth was the son of a rabbi and studied at Dusseldorf, Rome and Paris with Gleyre. He received medals in 157, 1859 and 1861. He was honored with the Legion d’Honneur in 1861. He exhibited portraits and paintings of genre subjects in the salon from 1863. In 1876 Heilbuth became a French citizen and in 1870 went to London where, between 1871 and 1878 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery. A talented portraitist he also specialized in landscapes and open air genre scenes. In his style and his choice of subjects he is reminiscent of James Tissot. Van Gogh mentions Heilbuth in his letters to Van Rappard.
