Thesee combattant le Centaure Bienor is an important fine cast from Barye's own atelier (workshop), the bronze has a warm dark green with mid brown patination and crisp hand finished surface detail, signed A L Barye Thesues was the greatest hero from ancient Greece. In many aspects he was like his famous cousin, Hercules, strong and extremely brave. Yet his courage and strength were matched with wisdom and compassion. It was at the ceremonial wedding of Peirithous and Hippodameia, the rulers of the Lapiths, that the Centaurs, as invited guests, became drunk and violent and attempted to carry the bride and other Lapith women off. Fierce fighting broke out between the Lapiths and the Centaurs. Thesues killed many Centaurs, including Bienor and through his bravery the Lapiths defeated the Centaurs and drove them out of Thessaly. The surviving Centaurs settled in Arcadia, where Hercules would meet them at Mount Pholoe. This powerful bronze composition captures the dynamic strength and realism of the epic battle where Thesues has jumped upon the Centaur's back using his own club to fight him.
