DESCRIPTION:
|
The image of a mother with her child is associated with abundance and the renewal of the forces of the earth. She is initiated in the society of the anyi who sing and dance during the funeral rites and important ceremonies. The seated position, the type of stool with a geometric pattern on the circular top, and the many bracelets that encircle her wrist, indicate that she was a high-ranking anyi, wife or mother of a king. The Bangwa social life revolves around the king, royalty, and secret societies. The importance of Bangwa art stems above all from the statuary, commemorative statues of the kings, queens, princesses and titled servants, as well as parents of twins. Sculptures, like this "maternity" figure are kept by the members of the lefem society (a group of the rich and powerful nobles) who exhibit them at funerals and royal worship, during a liturgy linked to the protection of the kingdom, to fecundity or the fertility of the earth, and during the annual propitiatory sacrifices, intended to bless and purify the kingdom.
