Martin Rico y Ortega was born in Madrid on 12 November 1833 and died in Venice on 13 April 1908. He was a friend of the French landscape painter Charles-Francois Daubigny and was one of the first Spanish artists to paint his subjects in situ. He settled in Paris and exhibited there, winning medals in 1878 and 1889.
Ortega is predominantly recognised for small, highly detailed paintings with a focus on architecture and light.
He is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as museums in Madrid, Reims and Seville.
