DESCRIPTION:  Late Period

The deity stands mummiform, his head surmounted by ram's horns, a solar disk and ostrich plumes. The piece is carved out of cedar wood and has extensive remains of its original black, green, white, red and yellow pigment. Ptah was originally the creator god of Memphis, gradually, however, the deity of this god became merged with another hawk deity, Sokar, who served as a funerary deity. By the Late Period this combined god was also absorbed into the identity of Osiris, the god of the dead, thereby resulting in the images of Ptah Sokar Osiris. During the Late Period, this composite deity was regularly included in funerary equipment. The piece here is represented with a green face and black tripartite wig with black mummiform body, a white register with black hieroglyphic inscription and a banded color section around the waist. The hieroglyphs translate as follows, "May a royal offering be given [to... Osiris] foremost of the West, lord of eternity, wise one [...], the elder who is foremost of his necropolis." Excellent style and condition for this type of piece. The crown and horns have been reattached
