DESCRIPTION:  This painting has been authenticated and cataloged by Charles Kingzett of Frost & Reed Ltd., London.

A magnificent painting of a ship under sail by the accomplished maritime artist Montague Dawson. Born the son of an English Merchant Marine Captain, Dawson's passion for the sea and its vessels rooted at an early age. Although he never received formal art training, his flair for painting and his intrinsic talents earned him a reputation as the "King of the Clipper Ship School."

In 1910, Dawson worked on posters and illustrations for a commercial art studio and then joined the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the First World War. During this time, he supplied illustrations for the British publication The Sphere. Following the war, he became a self-employed painter and illustrator concentrating on historical subjects and his amazing portraits of deep water sailing vessels. During the Second World War, Dawson once again provided The Sphere with illustrations of the events of the war, earning fame for his descriptions of confrontations between American and enemy ships.

A member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Dawson exhibited his works at the Royal Academy between 1917 and 1936 and was a regular exhibitor at the Society of Marine Artists from 1946 to 1964. Dawson's illustrations and paintings remain as some of the most important maritime works of the 20th century.
