Die Quelle/Verlag Martin Gerlach
This extremely rare and important portfolio of 60 original lithographic designs (30 in color, 30 in black and white) for use in interior decoration is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful books from the turn-of-the-century period. The third volume in this "Die Quelle" series, Flächenschmuck (Decorations for Flat Surfaces) features ferns, flowers, berries, mermaids, human figures, masks, exotic dancers and many other images in allover patterns for textiles, wallpapers, rugs and upholstery fabrics. A seminal work by one of the founders of the Wiener Werkstätte, this portfolio constitutes one of the prime printed examples of Secessionist style, and, as such, has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Flächenschmuck republished unabridged by Dover Publications in 1998 (Moser, Koloman. Turn-of-the-Century Viennese Patterns and Designs. Minneola, New York: Dover Publications Inc., 1998).
