Jose Zanine Caldas, known simply as Zanine, was one of Brazil's foremost architects and furniture designers up until his death in 1998. A retrospective exhibition of his works was held adjacent to the Louvre at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris in 1989. Zanine was one of the first truly ecologically conscious artists; he worked exclusively with reclaimed timber for the construction of his homes and the custom furniture that would make up the interiors of his commissions. This table was custom made some time in the early 1970's of reclaimed peroba and brauna woods for one such home.
