These fourteen, painted relief sculptures in wood by Hans Arp were originally used by the artist to print his album, Soleil Recerclé published in 1966 by Louis Broder. It was the most ambitious project resulting from the collaboration of artist and print publisher, which had its origins in 1957 with the album La Voilier dans la Forêt and continued as Arp participated in several group projects involving some of Broder’s favorite artists: Giacometti, Miro, Picasso, Braque…
Soleil Recerclé began as a series of collages made from colored and painted papers. Arp used the collages to create his wooden forms. These in turn served to print the images of his album. The artist then painted the wooden forms and transformed them into fourteen relief sculptures, demonstrating his fascination with the interplay of form and color, evolving in space from the flat surface of the collages to the three dimensional sculptures.
Each sculpture has been registered in the archives of the Fondation Arp in Clamart, the Fondazione Marguerite Arp in Locarno and the Stiftung Hans Arp und Sophie Taeuber-Arp e. V in Remagen-Rolandswerth.
They are sold as a group and each sculpture is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity established by the Foundation Arp, Clamart in November 2006.
